Accidental death and dismemberment insurance, or AD&D, pays a benefit to a beneficiary in the event of an accidental injury. It's often included as a rider or add-on to life or health insurance policies, but it also can be purchased as a stand-alone policy.
It's a limited coverage supplemental insurance policy, and it shouldn't be used as a replacement for a broad coverage life insurance policy like term or permanent life insurance.
AD&D policies can have a variety of terms and conditions, so it's important to read the policy details carefully. For example, some insurers may only pay out for accidents that can't be foreseen, and they might exclude certain types of injuries, such as loss of a limb or partial paralysis.
The amount of the benefit is also a significant factor, with more severe injuries (like loss of a limb) resulting in higher payouts.
Most insurers limit the number of times a beneficiary can claim an AD&D payout, but this limit varies by company and by policy type.
In addition, some insurers will only pay out if the injury results from a covered accident and not from something that can be predicted, such as an illness or suicide.
The cost of an AD&D policy can vary based on the type and amount of coverage, but it's usually less expensive than life insurance because it only covers accidents and not natural causes of death.
It can be a good option for people who want additional financial protection in case of an accident, but it's not usually necessary for those with a comprehensive health or life insurance policy.
All benefits-eligible employees are automatically covered by Syracuse University-sponsored basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance in the amount of $3,000. Optional supplemental AD&D insurance is available to eligible employees at an additional cost to their payroll deduction.
The maximum amount of supplemental AD&D coverage is equal to the sum of the employee's basic and supplemental life insurance.
It's not a substitute for life insurance. Many people mistakenly assume that AD&D and life insurance are the same thing, but this is not necessarily true.
While both types of insurance offer a death benefit, only life insurance will pay out in the event of an unplanned accident or tragedy that's not caused by illness.
An AD&D policy is more specific about what it will and won't cover, and it can provide a peace of mind for those who are concerned about being seriously injured or killed in an accident that cannot be foreseen.
It can also be a good supplement to a life insurance policy and help to offset some of the costs associated with high-risk activities.
If you're considering purchasing an accidental death and dismemberment policy, be sure to shop around and compare rates.
Then, take into account the amount of other coverage you have through work or another source, as well as your personal expenses. This will help you decide whether or not this type of coverage is right for you.
